WHAT IS THIS SEER NUMBER ANYWAY?
HOW CAN I TELL IF IT WILL SAVE ME ENERGY?
This is how to estimate savings by increasing the SEER number when buying an air conditioner.
1 ton of air conditioning is equivalent to 12000 BTU
For the examples we will use a 4 ton unit which is equivalent to 48000 BTU.
Divide 48000 by the SEER number. This gives you the watts used per hour.
Next divide the watts used per hour by 1000 to get kilowatt hours (utility company’s bill
by the kilowatt hour).
Next multiply the kilowatt hour (KWH) times 2800. *The 2800 is the average hours an air conditioner operates in Florida for 1 year.
Next multiply the average hours by the cost per kilowatt hour (.12 cents for Florida Power).
The answer is the cost to run the equipment for 1 year.
Example using 14 SEER:
480000 BTU / 14 SEER =3428.57 watts per hour
3248.57 / 1000 =3.428 KWH
3.428 X 2800 HOURS =9598 kWh per year.
9598 x .12 cents = $1151 total cost to run the AC for 1 year
Example using 16 SEER:
48000 / 16 = 3000.00 watts per hour
3000 / 1000 = 3kwh
3 x 2800hours =8400 kWh per year
7500 x .12 cents = $1008 total cost to run the AC for 1 year.
This is roughly a $128 per year savings for the higher SEER.
You have to consider the difference in installed prices of the 2 options and then decide if the savings is worth it. Most untilty companies offer a nice rebate for the high SEER’S which adds to the savings.
Do not confuse any savings as a decrease of that amount in the electric bill. This is just the cost to run an air conditioner for one year.
